Anki Language Learning: Learn Phrases, Not Words

Anki is one of the most effective tools for language learning — but the flashcards you put into it matter more than the app itself. This guide shows you how to move from isolated vocabulary to high-frequency lexical chunks you can actually use in conversation.

What you will learn

The problem with word-by-word flashcards

Traditional Anki decks ask you to memorise one word at a time: cuenta = account. That is useful, but it does not teach you how natives speak. In real Spanish, cuenta lives inside phrases like darse cuenta de (to realize), tener en cuenta (to take into account), and cuenta bancaria (bank account).

When you study the chunk as a unit, you absorb grammar, prepositions, and collocations automatically. You also avoid the classic "literal trap" — translating word-for-word from English and sounding unnatural.

What is a lexical chunk?

A lexical chunk is a group of words that native speakers store and retrieve as one unit. Examples include verb-noun collocations, fixed expressions, and prepositional frames. Instead of building sentences from grammar rules, fluent speakers pull ready-made chunks from memory.

How to build an Anki chunk deck

1

Pick a target word

Choose a word you keep seeing but cannot use naturally. Good candidates are high-frequency nouns and verbs such as decision, tiempo, prendre, or Zeit.

2

Mine chunks with ChunkMaster

Enter the word, select your target language, and click Mine Chunks. ChunkMaster returns 4–5 native collocations for that word, each with a natural meaning, a literal-trap warning, and a real example sentence.

3

Practise with cloze cards

Toggle Practice Mode to hide the missing word in each sentence. This forces active recall — the same mental process Anki uses — before you ever open the app.

Example cloze card

Me ____ cuenta de que estaba equivocado.

Answer: di

Export to Anki

Click Export All to Anki (.CSV) to download a file with Front, Back and Tags columns. Import it into Anki with the default CSV import settings, map the fields, and start reviewing.

Tips for reviewing chunks in Anki

  • Read the cloze sentence aloud before revealing the answer.
  • If a chunk has audio, listen first, then repeat it yourself.
  • Add one new chunk deck per study session — quality beats quantity.
  • Review the literal-trap warning when you get a card wrong.
  • Suspend cards you already know cold; focus on productive recall.
